More than a century after its completion and three years after being recognized as a cultural world treasure, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House will soon reopen to the public. The landmark home in East Hollywood’s Barnsdall Art Park was closed for more than two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why is it called the Hollyhock House?
Unlike Wright’s other Los Angeles commissions, “Hollyhock” is not someone’s last name. Before it was even designed, Barnsdall decided to name the house after her favorite flower—hollyhock. Wright used the name as inspiration, implementing an abstract hollyhock motif throughout the house’s façade and interiors.
